Next come the Tricky Words! While most of the words that your child will meet in our books and activities are fully decodable (can be sounded out), there are a few common exception words or 'tricky words' which do not follow the normal rules. Words such as 'I', 'the' or 'said' need to be learnt off-by-heart as sight vocabulary.

Tricky Words are introduced progressively over the weeks so that your child will begin to build up a secure sight vocabulary. Again, practise these words daily as your child is aiming for rapid recall of all 12 tricky words in each unit by the last week. Again your child can shout out their Tricky Words along with our fun animations or alternatively Tricky Word flashcards can be downloaded on the Printable Resources page of each unit.

Spend about 3 minutes per day practising

tricky words.
